The candle then sets for 24 hours (72 hours is ideal for optimal scent throw) and you have a completely waste-free candle refill! Simply melt, refill and light to enjoy your luxurious candle scents.
What are FILL- Clean Candle Refills Made of?
We are happy to offer clean ingredients for our candles. What you won’t find are toxins, paraffin wax or any petroleum based ingredients, hormone disrupters or hormone blockers, parabens, or Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that lead to indoor air pollution.
We offer soy wax based candles with phthalate free and paraben free fragrance oils and essential oils.
Are these candles safe for pets and children?
Yes, these candles are safe for all members of the family including the furry ones too. Please make sure that the candles are kept out of reach of children and pets to ensure your loved one’s safety!
How do I know what size of candle to buy?
We offer 2 sizes of candles in 8 oz (200 grams) or 10 z (260 grams). Our 8 oz size is suited for candle vessels that are 2.5 inches in diameter and 8 oz in volume. Our 10 oz candle refill is suited for candle vessels that are 3.5 inches in diameter and 10 oz in volume.
What if I have a larger sized vessel that I would like to fill?
The candle refills are intended for 8 oz and 10 oz volumes and the wicks correspond to those particular sizes. If you choose a vessel that is wider than the intended size, your candle refill may not burn edge to edge as the wick may be too small. You are able to order additional wicks for larger sized vessels and it is suggested that you choose an extra large wick for vessels that have a 4- 4.5 inch diameter.
What kind of vessels should I use for my candle refills?
Be creative! You can either use existing candle vessels or you can choose something unique to upcycle your candle refill into like jars, mugs, cups or tchotchkes from the thrift store. The best candle containers are: glazed ceramic, sealed metal containers, tempered glass and enamel.
Containers that shouldn’t be used are wooden, terracotta or plastic containers. Also, do not use a container that doesn't have a flat bottom, or is made of flammable materials or can not hold water.
Do Clean Candle Refills have an expiry date?
Because the package is 100% compostable, the candle refills have a shelf life of 3 months in the bag. If the candle refill stays in the bag for more than 3 months, there is a chance that the bag will begin to break down.
We encourage you to make your candle shortly after receiving the refill to ensure that the packaging doesn’t break down. You can then burn the candle at any time you like without any expiry on the filled candle, as the expiry only applies to the compostable bag.
Where are Fill- Candles Clean Candle Refills made?
All of our candle refills are hand poured right here in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, Canada. We take a great deal of pride in our product quality, our ingredients, our sustainability practices while ensuring our customers receive an affordable luxury candle with clean ingredients that is Canadian made.
Making your Clean Candle Refill
How do I prepare my candle jar before refilling?
We encourage you to use a clean and empty jar for optimal results. Ensure the candle vessel is clean of any remaining wax or wicks by pouring boiling water into the vessel. When water has cooled slightly, use a spoon to remove the wax and wick.
Place wax and wick (not the metal base) in compost or garbage and don’t put any wax down the sink or it may clog the drain. You can use a paper towel to remove any remaining wax left behind.
What are the Steps to Refilling?
MELT REFILL LIGHT
- Make sure the candle vessel is clean. See above for details on how to clean the candle vessel/jar.
- Open the Clean Candle Refill bag and remove the crackling wood wick and metal base with the sticker. Remove one side of the sticker and place the sticky side down in the centre of the vessel. Once affixed, peel the top side of the sticker and place the metal base and metal which on the sticker.
- Ensure everything is removed from the bag except the scented soy wax. Place the bag standing up in a microwavable bowl to catch any spills should they occur.
- Microwave the bag for 2 to 2 1/4 minutes or until wax is melted. Do not leave the bag unattended while microwaving.
- BAG CONTENTS WILL BE HOT SO USE CAUTION. Remove the microwavable bowl containing the candle bag, remove the bag and carefully pour the melted wax into the candle vessel.
- Let set undisturbed for 24 hours (72 hours is best for optimal scent throw). Once the candle has set, trim the wood wick to ⅛-¼ inch.
- Compost your candle refill bag.
- Light your crackling wood wick and enjoy your clean candle refill. Please note wood wicks do require multiple attempts at lighting until burn is achieved. Always ensure the wick stays this length before relighting and remove any charred bits that are greater than ¼ inch. Please light your clean candle and let it burn until the wax is melted from edge to edge of your vessel to prevent any tunneling. Enjoy!
The zipper on the bag melted. Is it still ok to pour the candle?
Yes. The zipper on the bag is also 100% plant based so it is still ok to pour the candle if the zipper has melted.
How do I get the crackling wood wick to light?
Wood wicks offer a beautiful crackling sound but can be tricky to light sometimes. You'll want to light these differently from cotton wicks, but it's very simple: When lighting a wood wick candle, the best technique is to tilt it on an angle and let the flame draw across the length of the wick (kind of like how you tilt a match after lighting). It may also take several tries to get it lit!. Trim wood wick to ⅛- ¼ inch before lighting and maintain this length each time the candle is lit. Break off any additional charred bits on the wick that is greater than ¼” before lighting the candle.
How do I prevent candle tunnelling?
Believe it or not, candle wax has a kind of “wax-memory,” and once a burning pattern has been established, it can be hard to change. The first burn is the most important! Give your candle enough burning time to develop a melted wax pool that goes all the way to the edge of the container on the first use, which usually requires at least 2-3 hours.
How do I compost the bag?
The bag is 100% compostable and safe for both back yard and industrial composters. Simply add the bag to your compost as you would any other compostable product. Industrial composters will be able to accept the 100% plant based bag. For backyard compost, simply add the bag to your compost. The bag will break down and the rate will depend on varying compost conditions.
Is the bag certified compostable?
Yes! The packaging for our candles was very important to us to ensure that there wasn’t so we ensured that the bags were Certified Compostable.
